Makers of the Week: Last Chance for Nominations!

By

Calling all creative small business owners! The nomination period for the 2013 American Made Audience Choice Awards ends this Sunday, August 25, at midnight (Deadline extended!). Login to finish your nomination or start one here. Voting starts next week so get you’re clicking fingers ready. Show support for your favorite makers by voting for them. You can vote up to six per day. Check out a few of my favorite and browse all our nomineestoday.

Food: Owl’s Brew

With its chic black apothecary bottle, I might buy Owl’s Brew just for it’s good looks (styling a home bar is one part good ingredients, one part pretty bottle, right?) But the tasty tea concentrate inside is definitely worth a spot in your mixer rotation. Created by Jennie Ripps and Maria Littlefied, Owl’s Brew is a flavorful blend of black iced tea created specifically for cocktails. Jennie and Maria know what they’re talking about; before starting Owl’s Brew they had a loose leaf tea company.

Craft: Shop-Keep

I love Mandy Blankenship’s philosophy around quilt making; her work emphasizes the creation of something new from the destruction of something old turning scraps into a cozy, modern quilt. She uses denim castoffs from her studio mates at Cone Mills denim, uniting the maker community in Greensboro, NC.

Garden: Living Roofs

This couple (she’s a landscape architect, he’s an ecologist), have turned their passion for plants into a growing business green-ing the roofs of North Carolina. These beautiful urban landscapes help save energy and improve air quality with their green goodness.

Design: Belle & Union Co.

Meg Sutton’s hand-rendered typography and illustrations scream modern Americana. I love the classic appeal of pickle prints and retro trailers brought to life with poppy, vibrant colors. The wit and whimsy of Meg’s cards always makes me smile, and I’m glad to see her back in the running for a second year after her stint as a 2012 Audience Choice Award finalist.

*If you’ve been thinking about nominating your business, now is your chance. The deadline for submissions has been extended to midnight on Sunday August 25. Voting starts Monday August 26!
