A Treat from Maine

By

I just got back from a long weekend in Maine, my home state, and returned with (what felt like) a bushel of blueberries! They are, after all, our state fruit. I was lucky to grow up with an entire backyard filled with wild blueberry bushes and my sweet mother was nice enough to send me back to the city with some tiny, tart Maine souvenirs.

cleaned and dried!

My first inclination was to bake something up to share with the office: who better to appreciate fresh berries than Living staffers! You may have seen a glimpse on our instagram page, but I dug out my mother’s favorite recipe, tweaked only slightly (I like to add a crumb topping, but it’s optional) and have shared below.

{Wild Maine} Blueberry Muffins (makes 12 standard muffins)

  • 1.5 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries, washed and dried

Crumb topping:

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400°F, prep muffin pan with liners and set aside.
2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and sugars in a large bowl.
3. Lightly beat egg in a smaller bowl.
4. Add milk and melted butter to egg.
5. Fold liquid mixture into dry ingredients until fully combined.
6. Fold in blueberries.
7. Fill muffin tins 2/3 to top.
8. Using a fork or your fingers, mix all topping ingredients in a separate bowl, until large clumps form.
9. Divide and sprinkle topping evenly over all muffins.
10. Bake 18-20 minutes until lightly gold, remove from tin and cool on rack.

  • Wild blueberry season is, hands-down, my favorite part of living in Maine. These muffins look delicious, by the way. I’ll have to give the crumb topping a try when I make my next batch!

  • I made these this weekend and they are my new favorite! I think I might try them again today but cut back on the sugar and add a mashed banana.

  • [...] Martha Stewart Living Blog: {Wild Maine} Blueberry Muffins - really, REALLY GOOD. I used dark brown sugar exclusively and they were excellent. Not the prettiest muffins on the block that way though. [...]
