Save Your Skin: 4 Tested-and-Approved Sunscreens

By

In the depths of a brutal New York City winter, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to hop on a plane and fly halfway across the world to Australia. I knew that this escapade would involve some unavoidable pitfalls (the 20-hour plane ride, jet lag, and Vegemite breakfasts, to name a few), but there was one that I was determined to escape: burning my chalky white skin to a crisp! So I loaded up sunscreens from the Martha Stewart Living beauty closet before setting off. Here are the formulas that kept me über protected Down Under and that you may want to stock up on now that the weather is finally warming up!Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Broad Spectrum SPF 70: Always a great go-to. It’s lightweight, gently-scented, and feels nice and light on skin. $10, neutrogena.com

Shiseido Extra Smooth Sun Protection Lotion SPF 38: Pretty high on my list. This liquid is extremely waterproof and a wonderful choice for those with sensitive skin. It isn’t the slightest bit sticky. $34, shiseido.com

Supergoop! SPF 50 Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C:  Applied to wet or dry skin, this ably does the job. It has a wonderfully light, fresh scent and is infused with antioxidant Vitamin C. $19, supergoop.com

Coola Organic Sport SPF 45 Unscented Moisturizer: Composed of more than 70% organic ingredients, Coola is a very clean and hydrating sunscreen. I especially admire the fact it’s crafted at a solar facility in Southern California! (Using sun to protect us against sun: Clever!). $32, coolasuncare.com
