My niece and nephew (Kinsley, 1, and Carson, 3) recently went on their first beach vacation. To give the kids a preview of what they’d be doing there, my sister-in-law created an advent calendar to count down the days before they hit the shore. Inside each pocket was a beach-themed activity for every day leading up to the trip.
Making the calendar is easy . My sister-in-law created hers using felt, hot glue, and precut numbers. She typed the activities in a Word document, printed it, and tucked an activity into each pocket.
The calendar got the kids excited about their first beach trip but it also made Carson feel like he was part of the planning because his activities included packing his clothes and beach toys.
Here are some of the beach-themed activities from the calendar:
-Watch a beach movie
-Make ocean water in a jar
-Bathtub scuba-diving lessons (these are now a staple of bath time)
-Shop for beach toys and swimsuits
-Pack your suitcase
-Practice building a sand castle
-Visit the library to read books about the beach
-Eat a seafood lunch
-Practice throwing and catching the beach ball
Do you have a ritual to get your family prepared for a vacation?
